the mean proportional, or geometric mean, is always written in the following format:

a/x = x/r, where a and r are two different numbers.

so the mean proportion of 5 and 20 is

5/x = x/20. just cross multiply and get 100 = x^2, which makes x = 10. 1

10 is the mean proportional.
