Given data :- 15, 28, 72, 56, 44, 32, 31, 43, 51

  • n = 9 (odd)

  • formula to find the median is = (n + 1/2)th term [this formula is used when n is odd)

first of all, we have to arrange the data in ascending or descending order.

  • I'm arranging in ascending order..

  • = 15, 28, 31, 32, 43, 44, 51, 56, 72

Therefore it's median = (9 + 1/2)th term

  • = (10/2)th term

  • = 5th term

  • = 43

hence, it's median is 43.

  • now, if 31 is replaced by 46.

first let's arrange the data again.

  • = 15, 28, 32, 43, 44, 46, 51, 56, 72 (removed 31 and replaced by 46)

since n = 9

  • The median will be the 5th term once again.

  • This time the 5th term is 44.

So, hence the median is 44.
