Given : A photo is 15 centimeters high and 9 centimeters wide.

Mikael wants to proportionately shrink it so its height is 6 centimeters high.

To Find : How wide would it then be

Solution :

Photo Original height  = 15 cm

Photo Original width  = 9 cm

Shrinked height  = 6 cm

Shrinked width =  w  cm

Original height  / Shrinked height   =  Original width  / Shrinked width

=>   15/ 6    = 9/w

=> 5/2   = 9/w

=> w = 9 * 2/5

=> w = 18/5

=> w = 3.6

it would be 3.6 cm wide

 \tt \: Original \: height \:  = 15cm \\  \tt \: Original \: width \:  = 9cm \:  \:  \:  \:

 \tt  Shrinked \: height \:  = 6cm \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:   \\  \tt \: Shrinked \: width \:  = let \: it \: be  \cal \: x

 \tt \: So -:

 \tt \:  \frac{original \: height}{shrinked \: height}  =  \frac{original \: width}{shrinked \: width}

 \tt \:  \frac{15}{2}  =  \frac{9}{ \cal  x}

 \tt \:  \frac{5}{2}  =  \frac{9}{ \cal x}

 \cal \: x \tt \:  = 9 \times  \frac{2}{5}

 \cal \: x \:  =  \tt \:  \frac{18}{5}

 \cal \: x =  \tt \: 3.6
