I thought that to get the pH of a strong acid, you just need to find the molar concentration of the acid (.05), then do -log(.05).

That seems wrong though, based on what you said about 2 H+ ions being produced for every 1 acid molecule.

Then it would be -log(.1), which would be equal to 1.
