find the point which divide the line segment joining the points (1,7) ,(-6,-3) in the ratio 2:3

let the points be (x,y)

then according to section formula

x =  \frac{mx2 + nx1}{m + n}

here, x2 = -6, x1 = 1

m = 2 , n = 1

y2 = -3 , y1 = 7

x =  \frac{2 \times ( - 6) + 3 \times (1)}{2 + 3}

x =  \frac{ - 12 + 3}{5}

x =  \frac{9}{5}

also

y =  \frac{my2 + ny1}{m + n}

y =  \frac{2 \times ( - 3) + 3 \times 7}{2 + 3}

y =  \frac{ - 6 + 7}{5}

y =  \frac{1}{5}

hence \: x =  \frac{9}{5}  \: and \: y =  \frac{1}{5}
