Answer:The equation

2 x 2 − x − 4 : is of the form  a x 2 + b x + c = 0  where:

a = 2 , b = − 1 , c = − 4

The Discriminant is given by:

Δ = b 2 − 4 ⋅ a .c

= ( − 1 ) 2 − ( 4 ) ⋅ ( 2 ) ( − 4 )

= 1 + 32

= 33

As  Δ > 0  there are two solutions,

The solutions are found using the formula:

x = − b ± √ Δ  / 2 ⋅ a

x = − ( − 1 ) ± √ 33  / 2 ⋅ 2   =  1 ± √ 33  / 4

The solutions are:

x = 1 +√ 33  /

     4

x = 1 − √ 33  / 4
