The point which divides the line segment joining (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) in the ratio m:n is given by ,

 x = \frac{mx2 + nx1}{m + n}

y =  \frac{my2 + ny1}{m + n}

Here, x = -1, y = 6

And the ratio m: n should be found out . So, we can take m/n as k.

So, the formula will become,

x  =  \frac{kx2 + x1}{k + 1}

y =  \frac{ky2 + y1}{k + 1}

That is,

 - 1 = \frac{6k - 3}{k + 1}

 - k - 1 = 6k - 3

7k = 2

k = 2/7

That is,

m:n = 2:7 (Ans)
