We need oxygen mainly for the oxidation of glucose to give out energy. If we don't take in oxygen constantly, glucose in our body will not be oxidized and we will have no energy. In other words, we will die without it. This is because we need energy constantly to carry out the various metabolic processes in our body and also, keep our body temperature constant as we are warm-blooded animals.

- (We breathe because oxygen is needed to burn the fuel [sugars and fatty acids] in our cells to produce energy.) (Oxygen is brought into the lungs via breathing, where it is transported by red blood cells to the entire body to be used to produce energy.
