We need oxygen mainly for the oxidation of glucose to give out energy. If we don't take in oxygen constantly, glucose in our body will not be oxidized and we will have no energy. In other words, we will die without it. This is because we need energy constantly to carry out the various metabolic processes in our body and also, keep our body temperature constant as we are warm-blooded animals.
