Given:

Wavelength of light,

λ = 6328 A° = 6328 × 10⁻¹⁰ m

Temperature, T = 27° C

                          = 300 K

To find : Ratio of population of the two states, N₂/N

Explanation:

Formulae:

Energy difference, ΔE = hc/λ

Ratio of population of the two cities = N₂/N₁ = e^-^A^E^/^k^T

ΔE = (6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ × 3 ×10⁸) / (6328 × 10⁻¹⁰)

     = 3.143 × 10⁻¹⁹ J

ΔE/kT = (3.134 × 10⁻¹⁹) / 1.38 × 10⁻²³ × 300

       ∴ = N₂ / N₁ = e⁻⁷⁶

          = 1.1 × 10⁻³³

Ratio of population of the two states,

∴ N₂ / N₁  = 1.1 × 10⁻³³

Answer = 1.1 × 10⁻³³
