x^2 - 2x - 8 = 0
=> x^2 - 2x = 8
Add the square of half of the coficient of x in both sides
=> x^2 - 2x +1^2 = 8 + 1^ 2
=> (x-1)^2 = 9
=> x-1 = plus minus 3
x = 4 and - 2
=> x^2 - 2x = 8
Add the square of half of the coficient of x in both sides
