a : b = b : c
4 : 12 = 12 : c
4 / 12 = 12 / c
4 c = 12 × 12
c = 144 / 4 = 36
therefore ,
third proportional = 36

(2) : Find third proportional of 1km 500m, 300 m
let a = 1 km 500m = 1000m + 500m = 1500 m
and b = 300 m
a : b = b : c
1500 : 300 = 300 : c
1500 / 300 = 300 / c
1500 × c = 300 × 300
1500 c = 90000
c = 60
therefore therefore proportional = 60
