The value of k when the polynomial 4x^{3}-2x^{2}+kx+5 is divided by 2x + 1 and leaves a remainder -10 is 28.

  • Given polynomial is

                4x^{3}-2x^{2}+kx+5

  • It leaves remainder -10 when divided by 2x + 1

                ⇒ f(-1/2) = -10

                ⇒ 4(\frac{-1}{2})^{3}-2(\frac{-1}{2})^{2}+k(\frac{-1}{2})+5=-10

                ⇒ -\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{2}-\frac{k}{2}=-15

                ⇒ -\frac{k}{2}=-15+1

                ⇒  -\frac{k}{2}=-14

               ⇒ k = 28

            ∴ The value of k is 28.
