Given that x - 1 is a factor of x² + xk .

So , x - 1 = 0

x = 1

If x is the factor of given equation then the value of the equation should be equal to zero when value of x is putted in it .

⇒ x² + xk = 0

(1)² + (1)k = 0

1 + k = 0

k = -1
