For the equation having equal roots,

D = 0

and, here,

D = $b^{2}$ - 4ac, where a = 4, b = p and c = 3

So,

$b^{2}$ - 4ac = 0

$p^{2}$ - 4 (4) (3) = 0

$p^{2}$ - 48 = 0

$p^{2}$ = 48

⇒ p = $\sqrt{48}$

or,

p = ±4√3

i.e.

p = + 4√3 and - 4√3
