Distance between two points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) can be calculated using the formula 

(x2−x1)2+(y2−y1)2

Distance between the points (p,−5) and (2,7)=(2−p)2+(7−(−5))2=13 

⇒(2−p)2+144=13 

(2−p)2+144=169

(2−p)2=25 

2−p=5   or 2−p=−5

p=−3 or p=7
