∆BCD is a right angled triangle,so according to Pythagoras theorem,

a²+b²=c².

BC²+DC²=BD²

12²+9²=x²

144+81=x²

225=x².

x=15 cm.

Similarly,

∆BAD is also a right-angled triangle.

BD²+AD²=AB²

15²+8²=y²

225+64=y²

289=y²

y=17 cm.
