to make it easy lets take {alpha and beta } as {a and b}

now as the equation is given y²-2y-7 =0

thus a +b =2 and ab =-7

now then

(i) a²+b²

=(a+b)²-2ab

= 2² +14

=18 is the ans

and

a³+b³

=(a+b)³ - 3*ab(a +b)

=2³ +42

=50 is the ans
