Let the two consecutive whole numbers be x, (x+1)

x(x+1) = 72

x ^2 +x -72 = 0

x^2 +9x -8x -72 = 0

x(x+9) -8(x+9) = 0

(x-8)(x+9) = 0

Therefore x = 8 and x= -9

But, -9 is not a whole number

Therefore , 8 and 9 are the required numbers
