Answer: x =32, y =8.

Step-by-step explanation:

Step1 -- Let the two numbers be x and y.

step2 -- since the difference between the two numbers is 24,

x - y =24

step 3 -- one number is four times the other,

x becomes 4x.

Therefore 4x - y =24

let us take y = x,

so, 4x -x =24

       3x = 24

        x = 24/3

        x = 8.

substituting x=8 in the equation, we get y = 8 (as x=y=8)

                4x = 4(8) =32.

Therefore x = 32 and y =8.
