since,  ( x+y )² = x² + y² + 2xy
and , x+y = -14    and  xy = 84
 now putting the values in the equation
( -14 )² = x² + y² + 2(84)
 196 = x² + y² + 168
 x² + y² = 196-168
x² + y² = 28

Step-by-step explanation:

As we know

(x+y)²=x²+2xy+y²

Substitute the values as per given

x²+ 2(84) +y² = (-14)

x²+ y²+ 168= 196

x² +y² = 196-168

x² + y²= 28
