Given : y -1/y =9

To Find :  y²+1/y² and y⁴+1/y⁴

Solution:

y -1/y =9

Squaring both sides

=> y² + 1/y² - 2y(1/y) = 9²

=> y² + 1/y² - 2 = 81

=>  y² + 1/y²  = 83

y² + 1/y²  = 83

Squaring both sides

y⁴ + 1/y⁴ + 2y²( 1/y²) = 83²

=> y⁴ + 1/y⁴ + 2 = 6889

=>  y⁴ + 1/y⁴  = 6887

y² + 1/y²  = 83

y⁴ + 1/y⁴  = 6887
