Given:

The arithmetic mean of two numbers is 25

The geometric mean of two numbers is 24

To Find:

The difference between the two numbers.

Solution:

let the two numbers be x and y

Arithmetic mean of two numbers is = (x+y)/2

The geometric mean of two numbers = \sqrt{xy}

According to the question,

(x+y)/2 = 25............... (i)

\sqrt{xy} = 24...................(ii)

On solving equation (i) and (ii)

 y = 50-x

 x^{2}-50x+576=0

so,

x= 32

y = 50-32

y = 18

The difference between two numbers

= 32-18

= 14

Hence, the difference between the two numbers is 14.
