Raj Kumar Shukla was
an illiterate poor indigo sharecropper based in Champaran. He was quite
resolute and wanted Gandhiji’s assistance in order to bring the plight of the
sharecroppers of his hometown to the latter’s notice. The fact that he was told
that Gandhiji was quite busy and had a lot of prior appointments did not deter
him from following the leader wherever he went. Gandhiji was impressed by his
determination and fixed a date for visiting Champaran. Gandhiji kept his word
and reached the place on time, as well as listened to the grievances of the
sharecroppers.

The Champaran episode began as an attempt to ease the sufferings of a large number of poor peasants. He got the wholehearted support of thousands of people. Gandhiji admitted that he had done a very ordinary thing. He declared that the British could not order him about in his own country. Hence he considered the Champaran episode as a turning point in life.
Rajkumar Shukla is described as being resolute because even after being told about the prior engagement of Gandhi at Cawnpore and other parts of the county, he does not quit. He continues to accompany Gandhi everywhere.
