BRICS is an acronym that is used for an association that has been formed including the world's 5 major emerging national economies like Brazil (B), Russia (R), India (I), China (C), and South Africa (S).
Earlier, it was just the first 4 countries and the group was called as BRIC. However, South Africa made its efforts to join the association and in December 2010, it was invited over to join the association making the name BRICS. Since then, South Africa has also become an official partner of the BRICS.
The first BRICS summit that was attended by South Africa was in April 2011. The summit was held in Sanya, China. Jacob Zuma, the then President of South Africa attended the summit as a full member.
