Although Indian thought had been influencing the world; and reaching the West for centuries; the first text to be translated into English(Elizabethan) was probably; the Panchatantra(ancient Sanskrit work by Vishnu Sharma; 3rd Century BCE.

In 1570, Thomas North translated it into Elizabethan English; The Fables of Bidpai: The Morall Philosophie of Doni (reprinted by Joseph Jacobs, 1888). As many historians including William Dalrymple note; the initial period of Indo-British interaction was marked by great reverence and curiosity from British and Western academia.

The first book written by an Indian in English was Travels of Dean Mahomet, a travel narrative by Sake Dean Mahomet published in England in 1793.
