The first initiation of liberation against the British was the War of Independence of 1857. The war is also know as the Indian Mutiny by many British historians.

The revolt started over an issue of greased cartridges. Before loading the cartridge, the end had to be bitten off. it was rumoured that the cartridges were greased with cow and pig fat. The sepoys refused to use them. Mangal Pandey, a sepoy, was hanged to death as he did not listen to the orders.

In Meerut, when the soldiers refused to use the cartridges, they were court martialled and put to prison. Their fellow soldiers however, managed to free them. Meerut was then sacked and British officers and other Europeans were put to death. The war spread quickly and Britain lost control over  Mathura, Kanpur, Jhansi, Allahabad, Lucknow and Delhi. British rule ceased to exist in now what is called Uttar Pradesh.

In Cawnpore, troops led by Nana Sahib kept British forces trapped. When promised a safe passage out, British surrendered. However, Sahib's forces turned on them and the British force plus 300 English women and children were massacred.
