hey

here is your answer

The question is purely hypothetical since medieval armies stood no chance against the might of industrialised Europe. However, let us assume that Brits had to abandon India after 1857. Who was likely to take over the major chunk? Mughals, no chance at all even though Bahadur Shah Zafar was the symbolic emperor declared by mutineers. Marathas,Sikhs or Rajputs? None of them. The strongest contenders were French followed by Portuguese. In the most likely outcome, India had been colonised by French empire then. Instead of Bombay or Madras, Daman and Pondicherry would have been our major trading ports and thriving metropolises.

What if there was no European involvement? Invaders from central Asia were no longer a threat. Mughals were ruined beyond any hope of revival. It would have been extremely difficult if not impossible for Sikhs and Marathas to regain their lost glory. Most likely there would have been a dozen kingdoms warring to expand. In the absence of European education, it is hard to imagine rise of Indian nationalism and unification like Italy and Germany.
