The Indian cropping season is classified into two main seasons - (1) Kharif and (2) Rabi. The Kharif cropping season is from July to October during the South-west monsoon. It means that Kharif crops are sown at the onset of monsoon and harvested when the rainy season is over. The Rabi cropping season is from October to March. It means that Rabi crops are grown in winter i.e. sown when the monsoon ends and harvested before the advent of the summer season.
The Kharif crops include rice, maize, sorghum, pearl millet or bajra, finger millet or ragi, pulses, groundnut, soybean, cotton etc.
