Double displacement reaction :- The reaction in which the two compounds exchange their ions and one of the product formed is insoluble in water is known as double - displacement reaction .

The insoluble substance formed as a result of precipitation reaction is known as precipitate.

It is denoted by downward arrow.

It's general formula is :-

AB + CD AD + BC

The double displacement reaction some times called neutralization reaction in case of acid and bases.

The examples of double displacement reaction are :-

NaSO4 + BaCl2 BaSO4 + NaCl

where BaSO4 is a white precipitate .
