supply chain of seeds which are used for sowing, seed banks or state led seed corporations keep good quality seeds and sell it to farmers. Seeds are stored in 50 Kg sacks and are inventoriesed using RFID tags/Barcode tags and the information is stored in systems so that the same can be traced in the event of any mishaps or miracles. The forecasting is based on led state Agricultural experts or food consultants and there is a lot of wastage in this value chain. Movement of the seeds to the farmers field happens using bullock carts to large trucks.

Once the farmers produce is ready for harvest, the farmer based on his economic background uses mechanical harvest methods or does it manually. In mechanical harvesting, the “raw seed” is extracted and stored in silos and later bagged and transported to the mills. Incase of manual harvesting, the hay/straw is beaten to remove the grains and later the grains are bagged and transported to the mills. Transportation to the mills are done using bullock carts to large trucks. Most of the mills would have contracted the nearby farmers to produce certain type of grains based on the mill’s forecast.

In the mills the grains are cleaned, washed, cut, graded and polished depending on the type of rice, wheat or pulse. Post processing the grains are bagged in 25 Kg or 50Kg Bags depending on the mills product which is shipped to the retail channel. Mills would have started receiving orders even before the grains are processed, very few mills produce without orders in place. The transportation between the wholesale channel and mills are done using large trucks.

Retail channels can be a private organisation who sell their brand whole grains or can be state run corporations which regulate prices and ensure the right price is maintained in the market. Only registered wholesalers operate in this state run corporations through which small retailers or wholesalers purchase to further sell to their end consumers. The retailers arrange their own transport or use the transporters in the wholesale yards at a cost.

HEY MATE , HERE IS UR ANSWER...

India is one of the largest food and grocery markets in the world and a large consumer of food products. Despite having a rich raw material base for food products, high food price inflation is becoming a major challenge facing the country. There is a shortage of supply due to issues in the food supply chain. The food supply chain is fragmented and only seven per cent of the perishable products are being processed. To counter this, the Indian government is offering several incentives to private and foreign investors in the food processing sector reflecting the government’s intention to attract investment. The large and unsaturated Indian market has attracted a number of foreign companies yet the country has not been able to be a part of their global production networks. There is a need for reforms in the food supply chain to enable India to reach out to its unrealised potential.
