For diluting the acid, the acid should be poured carefully in water and not the reverse. Why?

Acid must be added slowly  into water with constant stirring..

Explanation:

this is because if water is added to conc. acid the heat generated may cause the mixture to splash out and cause burns.it may also break the glass container due to excess local heating
