for the ancient times, the pole star was guide to directions. why?

pole star is always present in north thats why it was seem to be guide to directions.

Because at that time compass and clock was not invented and neither there was so much pollution.So stars can be seen easily.Dhruv tara or pole star always points towards north direction.
