Let the total current be I and current passing through 20 ohm, 10 ohm and 5 ohm be i1, i2 and i3 respectively.
Let the equivalent resistance be R.
V = 6 volts.
Considering that the resistors are connected in series :
R = 20 + 10 + 5 = 35 ohm
Acoording to Ohm's law,
V = IR
So, I = V/R = 6/35 = 0.1714 A.
i1 = i2 = i3 = 01714 A.
Considering that the resistors are connected in parallel :
1/R = 1/5 + 1/10 + 1/20 = 7/20
So, R = 20/7 = 2.857 ohm.
So, I = V/R = 6/2.857 = 2.1 A
i1 = V/20 = 6/20 = 0.3 A
i2 = V/10 = 6/10 = 0.6 A
i3 = V/5 = 6/5 = 1.2 A
