Reaction of sodium carbonate and calcium hydroxide

Explanation:

  • When sodium carbonate reacts with calcium hydroxide then sodium hydroxide and precipitate of calcium carbonate will be formed as product.
  • The net ionic equation involved is -

sodium carbonate + calcium carbonate → sodium hydroxide + calcium

                                                                                                            carbonate

                                Na₂CO₃ + Ca(OH)₂ →  2NaOH  +  CaCO₃

  • Calcium carbonate is used for softening of water and removes temporary hardness.
  • Sodium hydroxide is also known as caustic soda.
  • When calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide it forms calcium carbonate which turns milky. The required reaction is -

          Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃ + H₂O
