SOLUTION

GIVEN

For two lines 2x + y = 1 and x – y = 2 if the x coordinate of the common point is 1

TO DETERMINE

The y coordinate

EVALUATION

Here the given equation of the lines are

2x + y = 1 - - - - - - (1)

x – y = 2 - - - - - - - (2)

Equation 1 + Equation 2 gives

3x = 3

⇒ x = 1

From Equation 2 putting the value of x we get

1 - y = 2

⇒ y = 1 - 2

⇒ y = - 1

Hence the common point is ( 1 , - 1 )

x coordinate of the common point is 1

y coordinate of the common point is - 1
