Light is one of the requirements for photosynthesis. When a part of the leaf is covered from both upper and lower sides with a black paper strip, light will not reach to covered part. Hence, photosynthesis will not take place in covered part of the leaf.

This is an activity used to test whether sunlight is essential for conduction photosynthesis .

we have covered a part of leaf with black cloth so that sunlight can't enter that part of leaf and we can compare the differentiated result of photosynthesis on not receiving and receiving sunlight.

Iodine test is done to test presence of starch.

we will observe that.. on doing iodine test.. the uncovered part turns into blue black color showing that is conducted photosynthesis leading to formation of starch. whereas, the covered part of leaf wont show any change , showing that it didn't conduct photosynthesis.
