Pressure = force area Place a book on a weight scale and, whether you place it on its back, on its side, or balanced on a corner, it still exerts the same force. The weight reading is the same. Now balance the book on the palm of your hand and you sense a difference - the pressure of the book depends on the area over which the force is distributed.
