According to the given condition,
x = 2y - 1.
Thus,

But x = 2y - 1.

According to question...

X + Y = 8 - (1)

X = 2Y - 1 - (2)

subs 2nd eqn in 1st

X + Y = 8
2Y - 1 + Y = 8
3y = 9
y = 9/3 = 3

subs y in eqn 2

x = Y - 1
x = 3 - 1
x = 2

Hence , x = 2 and y = 3
