Given:

Four identical lumps of gold on one side of some scales balance with one identical lump and a 22kg mass.

To find:

An equation that could give us the value of mass of one lump of coal.

Calculation:

On a weighing balance (or common balance), when both the pans are on the same level , we can say that masses of the constituents on both sides are same.

Let mass of each lump be "x" kg.

  • So, on the left side , there are 4 lumps, hence the total mass will be 4x.

  • On the right side, there is a 22 kg mass along with one lump, so net mass will be 22+x.

  • These net masses must be equal.

So, required equation:

 \boxed{ \bold{  \large{\therefore \: 4x = 22 + x}}}

Now , solving it:

 \sf \implies \: 4x - x = 22

 \sf \implies \: 3x = 22

 \sf \implies \: x =  \dfrac{22}{3}

 \sf \implies \: x =  7.33 \: kg

So, mass of each lump is 7.33 kg.

Hope It Helps.
