Answer:

Sir: In certain cultures, including our own, when two people marry the wife’s family is required to give her husband and his family money or property. This is known as dowry. This culture has no place in modern, civilised society but is still practiced in some areas. No one can deny that this is a very damaging tradition, and has had a bad effect on Pakistani society.

While it can be a source of monetary relief and joy for the groom and his family, it is just the opposite for the brides family.

They have to bear an enormous and completely unnecessary cost to live up to society’s standards and satisfy the grooms family. Often, they are driven into ruinous debt to fulfil dowry demands.

The tradition should be done away with and the government should play its role by passing the legislation required to ban it completely.

Subject : Dowry : A social evil

Sir

Through the esteemed column of your newspaper, I wish to draw your attention towards the social evil 'Dowry'.

Dowry basically refers to an amount of property or money brought by a bride to her husband on their marriage. This practice started in the early 11th century. Girls always need to provide huge amounts of money to her in-laws. It has been banned but in some village areas, this bad practice still continues. The boy refuses to marry the girl without dowry. Only for their daughter to be married, the parents are forced to provide money even if they are facing financial crisis. Giving or taking dowry is an offence, but there is no effect on the people. The worst part here is that only the girl has to pay, not the boy. The boy shouldn't give dowry to the girl's family. Dowry has also been a cause of deaths of girls and her parents. The groom's family fights over the amount of dowry, torture the girl and harrass her. Deaths due to dowry are not less, they are in high numbers.

I hope this letter proves to be an eye opener for every individual. I wish the government takes appropriate measures for eradicating this problem from India.

Yours sincerely

XYZ
