formation of and cation in ionic compounds.... (plz give me answer in simple english with theory)...

during formation of ionic compound there is transfer of electrons,now the atom which loses electrons has excess of protons and thus gets a positive charge and is called cation.
eg :in formation of MgCl Mg loses two electrons and thus becomew Mg2+ cation
