in ionic compound the atom which loses electrons has excess of protons and is cation as it acquires +ve charge and the atom which gains electrons has excess of electrons and gets -ve charge and is called anion.
e.g.:in formation of NaCl sodium loses 1 electron and becomes Na+ and Cl gains 1 electron and becomes Cl -
