Petroleum is believed to have been formed by the decay of remains of ancient microscopic marine plants and animals under the layers of rocks and clay millions of years ago.

Natural Gas is a product of decomposed organic matter typically from ancient marine microorganisms deposited over past 500 million years. This organic material mixed with mud, silt and sand on the sea floor, gradually becoming buried over time.
