so Total expense is (40x+500). However it is said Rs 10 is expenditure reduced so for new passenger total passenger is (40+5)=45 and new expenditure is (x-10).

(40x+500) = 45(x-10)

or 40x+500=45x-450

or 5x=950

or x=190

So the original expense is 40x=40*190=7600

Therefore original expense of travelling in the bus is Rs 7600
