First, horticulture normally refers to raising small gardens or orchards and may include subsistence farming where people just grow enough for their own families. I know of no society that existed just on horticulture. So we must extend that to agriculture which takes us beyond subsistence farming.

There are lots of variables in this. So in the past as today, some places are better for growing crops and others are better for raising animals. But agriculture does have one extreme advantage. And that is it lets a people settle in one place. This allows for a much more diverse division of labor.
