let the total value be x

5% of total value = $4

5x/100=4

x=4×20

x=$80

money to first brother =50%×80=$40

money to second brother =25%×80=$20

money to third brother=20%×80=$16

money to fourth brother =5%×80=$4

Answer:

80 $

Step-by-step explanation:

Fast solution:

50 % + 25 % + 20 % = 95 %

the fourth received the remaining $ 4, it means that $ 4 = 5 % (100 % - 95 %).

So the problem becomes: $ 4 is 5 % of what number?

Formal formula=

4 = 5 / 100 X

4 = 1 / 20 X

X = $ 80

Fast Formula

$ 4= 5 % -->$ 8 = 10 % --> $ 8 * 10 = 100 % = $ 80.
