1) Facilitated diffusion involves the transport of molecules using the membrane bound proteins. In contrast, in simple diffusion, molecules pass through the membrane without the aid of carrier proteins. For example, ion channels allow the transport of ions into and out of the cell, they cannot pass through cell membrane.

2) The carrier transport becomes saturated as the concentration of the transport molecule reach the “transport maximum.” In contrast, the rate of diffusion increases with concentration gradient in simple diffusion, it does not become saturated.

3) If two molecules are transported by the same carrier molecules, they compete with each other, thereby the rate of transport decreases when they are present together. No competition between molecules is seen in simple diffusion.

4)There are many ways for a cell to transport molecules across its membrane. Diffusion is an example of passive transport. Passive means that no energy is required. Facilitated diffusion is a specific type of passive transport specific to large molecules, such as glucose, polar molecules, such as water, or ions, such as Na+.
