Four gas jars filled with sulphur dioxide gas were inverted into troughs of water by four students and the following observations and inference were reported
(a) Water did not enter the gas jar and sulphur dioxide is insoluble in water.
(b) A Small amount of water entered the gas jar slowly and sulphur dioxide is sparingly soluble in water.
(c) Water rushed into the gas jar and sulphur dioxide is highly soluble in water.
(d) Water did not enter the gas jar and sulphur dioxide is soluble in water.
The correct set of observations and inference drawn is reported in (1) (a)
(2) (b) (3) (c) (4) (d)

The correct set of observation and inference drawn is reported in option (b) - A Small amount of water entered the gas jar slowly and sulphur dioxide is sparingly soluble in water.

• The reaction between sulphur dioxide and water proceeds as follows :

SO₂ + H₂O → H₂SO₃

• Sulphur dioxide dissolves in water to a small extent, that is why the above reaction takes place very slowly.

• When a gas jar filled with sulphur dioxide is inverted into a trough of water, the gas, being slightly soluble, dissolves in water gradually.

• As the gas gradually dissolves in water, the water starts rising up in the jar occupying the vacant space.

• Hence, it is observed that a small amount of water enters the gas jar slowly and it is inferred that sulphur dioxide is sparingly soluble in water.
