Following are the five major events that led to the outbreak of the French revolution:

1. Social condition: the society was divided into three different estates of classes. The Third Estate was comprised of all other citizens of society except the clergy and the nobility. The estate was badly over-taxed by the monarchy; this overtaxing became one of the major causes of the French revolution.

2. Economic factors: the luxurious lifestyle of the king of France and his involvement in the war made the condition of France very bad.

3. Political factors: the emperor of France ruled like an autocrat and gave no equal rights to the people.

4. Intellectual reasons: during this time many of the scholars rejected the theory of the divine right to rule of the king.

5. Religious freedom: prior to the revolution in France, people were not allowed to follow their religion freely. Therefore, many of the people wanted to obtain the freedom of religion.
