Undoubtedly, Franz personified every school going child. Children usually don’t like going to school everyday. They love holidays; so they are always in search of excuses to miss schools. It is because they have to go to schools everyday and learn theoretical things which are usually boring.

Similarly, as Franz went to school that day there were many temptations enticing him not to go to school that day. The first temptation was his lack of preparation for the test on participles. Apart from it, there were other temptations. It was very warm and bright. The birds were chirping at the edge of the woods; and in the open field back of the saw-mill the Prussian soldiers were drilling. It was all much more tempting than the rule for participles, but he had the strength to resist, and hurried off to school.
